St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation’s Urban Angel Golf Classic
This year marks the 22nd year of St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation’s Urban Angel Golf Classic, one of the most successful hospital charity golf events in Canada. In the past 20 years, our tournament has raised $4.8 million to fund priorities at St. Michael’s Hospital such as renovations to patient care areas, new equipment and support for lifesaving research.
We have come a long way since our Engineering department spearheaded the tournament in 1987, raising $17,000 for St. Michael’s Hospital. This is only possible because of our generous sponsors, friends and volunteers. Thank you for your support over the past two decades.
Enjoy this look at how far we have come.
2003 – Foundation Board member Christopher Wright was chair of the 17th annual Urban Angel Golf Classic for the seventh time on July 9, 2003 at the Angus Glen Golf Club’s north and south course (second only to 10-time chair Tim Griffin, Foundation Board member and past chairman). Hosted by Lorne Rubenstein, golf columnist and host of TSN Acura World of Golf, and attended by NHL Hall of Famer Paul Coffey, St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation’s tournament surpassed its goal by $13,000, raising $513,000 for the Hospital.
2004 – Canadian comedian and TV host Mike Bullard hosted the 2004 tournament at the north and south courses of the Angus Glen Golf and Country Club. An incredible $703,000 was raised on July 7, 2004. Tournament chair Darryl White announced that the event exceeded its fundraising target by $103,000 largely because of two successful raffles for Toronto Maple Leafs season tickets. This was the second consecutive year that CIBC and CIBC World Markets came forward as our co-Greens sponsors.
2005 – Darryl White was chair for the second time on July 6, 2005 at the 19th annual hospital golf charity event, which raised $540,000—exceeding its goal by $40,000. The tournament was played on the north and south courses of Angus Glen and welcomed nine new sponsors, 13 signature sponsors and Olympians Kate Pace Lindsay, Karen Stemmle and Desai Williams. In 2005, St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation welcomed BMO Nesbitt Burns as our Greens Sponsor for the north course, and CIBC as our Greens Sponsor of the south course.
2006 – Under sunny skies on Angus Glen’s north and south courses, Michael Thompson chaired the 2006 Urban Angel Golf Classic, raising $654,000 for St. Michael’s Hospital. Held on July 5, 2006, the event introduced 20 signature sponsors and surpassed its goal by $40,000. BMO Financial Group was the 2006 Tournament Greens Sponsor.
2007 – Thanks a million to everyone who supported the 21st Urban Angel Golf Classic on July 17, 2007. St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation hit a milestone by raising more than $1 million to support Hospital priorities. Tournament chair Michael Thompson and vice-chair John Manning led the million-dollar event, which was broadcast live on Q107’s Derringer in the Morning. The Urban Angel Golf Classic was presented by Middlefield Group—the largest presenting sponsor in the history of the tournament. Special thanks to John King, executive vice president and chief administrative officer for the Hospital, for single-handedly raising over $600,000 in vendor sponsorships over the last three years. Bobby Orr hit the greens as the pro to beat on the fourth hole of the north course of the Angus Glen Golf and Country Club, which played host to the 2007 Canadian Open two weeks later.
